West Bengal

Darjeeling

Bengal has a long history that dates back to the period before the Aryan invasions of India. Known as 'Gauda' or 'Vanga' in ancient Sanskrit literature, Bengal had a well-settled civilization and culture. This fascinating land along the Hooghly has much to offer travelers. West Bengal’s terrain is diverse: some of the highest mountains lie in the upper reaches of Darjeeling, while the swampiest mangroves flourish in the Sunderbans. And if you are here, do not miss tasting the famous Mishti Doi!

Main Attractions

Darjeeling
The word Darjeeling is derived from two Tibetan words—‘dorje’ meaning ‘thunderbolt’ and ‘ling’ meaning ‘place’, thus translating to ‘the Land of the Thunderbolt’. As you move around the town, you will find extensive stretches of tea gardens that add lush beauty to the region. If you are in Darjeeling, one sight that will take your breath away is the majestic view of Kanchenjunga. Some of the major attractions include Ghoom Monastery, Senchal Lake, the Bengal Natural History Museum, Happy Valley Tea Gardens and the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Mirik

Mirik
Mirik is a splendid hill resort surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations. The most popular attraction here is the picturesque Sumendu Lake, where visitors can enjoy boating and fishing. Rameetay Dara and Deosi Dara are two scenic hilltops near the lake that offer wonderful views. You can also explore the area on horseback. Other places of interest include the Singha Devi Temple and Dudhi.

Kolkata
The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata is famously known as the ‘City of Joy’. With a history spanning over 300 years, it is also one of India’s oldest major ports. The city carries the sacred memory of Mother Teresa, whose compassionate service transformed countless lives. Kolkata is also the birthplace of eminent personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray. Notable attractions include Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial, Kalighat Temple, Eden Gardens, Belur Math, Fort William and more.

Kurseong

Kurseong
A scenic hill station, Kurseong is affectionately called the ‘Land of the White Orchid’, as the delicate flower grows abundantly here. Do not miss the experience of riding the famous Toy Train as it chugs along the route from Darjeeling to Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. Several short walks and long trails adorn the hillsides. Popular attractions include Tiger Hill, the Balason River, Chimney, Shiv Mandir, Deer Park and the Forest Museum.
