During Navaratri, a three-day annual festival known as Ambubachi (Ameti) attracts thousands of pilgrims. The festival symbolises the Goddess’s annual menstrual cycle, during which the temple remains closed for three days. On the fourth day, grand celebrations mark the reopening of the sanctum.

This picturesque town is an important centre of worship for Hindus. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, two brothers from Ayodhya discovered a Shivalingam in the forest of Tarakeshwar. Doubting the authenticity of their claim, villagers asked one of the brothers to undergo a test by holding hot iron. When he emerged unharmed, the villagers realised divine intervention. It was later revealed that Lord Shiva had appeared in the brother’s dream, instructing him to build a temple at the site.
Bodhgaya, Bihar
One of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in the world, Bodhgaya is where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment nearly 2,500 years ago, meditating under the sacred Bodhi Tree. Important pilgrimage sites include the Mahabodhi Temple, Vajrasana, the Bodhi Tree, Ashoka’s Pillar, and several monasteries representing countries from around the world.
