Overview
If you travel to India, the Golden Triangle Tour—covering three major cities across North India—remains a favourite among tourists. Whether you're a backpacker or a leisure traveller, the Golden Triangle Tour is a must-do in most itineraries.
One look at these cities and you instantly understand why. The Golden Triangle is magical in every aspect, offering a charming combination of the Capital City, the Pink City known for forts and palaces, and the ultimate symbol of eternal love. The name “Golden Triangle” comes from the geographical triangular route it forms, making it especially popular for short-duration visits.
The tour covers the three iconic cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, each roughly 200–250 km apart. Another major advantage is the excellent connectivity via road and a superfast railway network between these destinations.
So let's take a closer look at each city:
New Delhi
The capital city of India is vibrant and full of life, enriched by a potpourri of cultures. From its endless culinary delights to historic monuments and friendly locals, Delhi—fondly known as the land of “Dilliwalas”—is a paradise for shoppers and a testament to India’s growth and heritage.
Popular tourist attractions include Rajghat, Red Fort, India Gate, President House, Jantar Mantar and the Lotus Temple. For a deeper look into local culture, make sure to visit Old Delhi’s world-famous market, Chandni Chowk, renowned for colourful fabrics, jewellery and irresistible street food.
Agra
Globally renowned thanks to the majestic Taj Mahal, Agra offers far more than this iconic monument. The Taj, built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, is an eternal symbol of love. Rabindranath Tagore famously described it as a “teardrop on the face of eternity.”
The monument is crafted entirely from white marble and houses the graves of both Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Resting on the banks of the River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal looks especially enchanting on a full-moon night—an experience not to be missed.
Other highlights include Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the famous local sweet Petha.
Jaipur
Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is a favourite among tourists. Well-connected and brimming with the royal charm Rajasthan is known for, Jaipur is also famous as the first planned city of India. Its architecture, vibrant culture, textiles, handicrafts, wooden artefacts and silver jewellery make it a shopper’s paradise.
Major attractions include Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), City Palace, and Amber Fort & Palace. Staying in the heritage hotels here offers a chance to relive the royal era in true regal style.
Extended Version
For travellers who want to explore the cultural richness of North India in greater depth, the Golden Triangle Tour can also be extended to include two major destinations—the artistic wonder Khajuraho and the spiritual capital Varanasi (Banaras). Here is a closer look at both:
Varanasi (Banaras)
Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and considered the oldest living city in India, Varanasi is a delight for travellers seeking to explore culture or find spiritual peace. Widely regarded as the place where one attains moksha, it attracts thousands of visitors from across the world.
The evening Aarti (prayer) ceremony at the ghats of the River Ganges is one of the most spectacular sights, where devotees gather to offer prayers. It is believed that a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges can cleanse one of sins from past lives.
Khajuraho
Khajuraho is renowned for its erotic art depicted through over 20 ancient temples adorned with intricate carvings related to human sexuality. Originally, the site had 85 temples built during the 10th and 11th centuries, of which 20 remain today. The temples, open from sunrise to sunset, are a spectacular sight.
The village also hosts an annual dance festival in February/March, featuring a week-long showcase of breathtaking classical dance performances in front of the temples.
