Kumbakonam: The Cambridge of South India

The small town of Kumbakonam is located in Thanjavur, flanked by two rivers – Arasalar and Kaveri. Its history dates back to the times of Cholas, Pallavas, Pandyas, Madurai Nayaks, and Thanjavur Marathas. The town is famous for its finely embellished temples.

Kumbakonam gained prominence during British times for its cultural and educational value, earning it the nickname 'Cambridge of South India'. Known as the 'temple town', it hosts the Mahamaham festival once every 12 years, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to take a holy dip in the Mahamaham Tank.

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple: Located in the center of Kumbakonam, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to be 1300 years old, it was constructed by the Cholas in the 7th century and later renovated by the Nayaks. The gateway tower (rajagopuram) has nine stories.

Nageswaraswamy Temple: This Paadal Petra Sthalam temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the serpent king Nagaraja. The shrine of Rahu is a majestic feature. Built by the Cholas in the 8th century, the temple’s architecture allows sunlight to enter in a unique manner.

Kumbakonam TempleKasi Viswanathar Temple: Located near the Mahamaham Tank, this Paadal Petra Sthalam temple features nine images of river goddesses as its highlight.

Sarangapani Temple: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is one of the 108 sacred Vishnu temples (Divya Desams). Developed by Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagar rulers, and Nayaks, its main attraction is the temple chariot festival celebrated in March/April.

Airavatesvara Temple: Built by the Cholas in the 12th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site showcases Dravidian architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend says even Yama, the God of Death, worshipped here.
